Yesterday, I blogged about my Facebook incident that FIRE has brought attention to. Today, the Chronicle of Higher Education published a piece on the subject as well.

For FIRE’s overview of the case and opinion click here.

I talked to the Chronicle reporter briefly as she was making her inquiries. She asked me if I was concerned this story would hurt future job prospects. Honestly, I hadn’t really thought of this as I believed (and still do) that the transcript, picture of the status updates, and the ludicrous nature of some of the UCPD’s inquiries justified me wanting clarification of the investigation’s extent.

I very much understand the importance of campus police in protecting university students, faculty, and staff. So, putting aside whether the UCPD actively monitors student online content, I respect the UCPD wanting to talk to me about my status update. That said, I became perplexed at what occurred when I was being investigated; specifically, the personal questions that came from the officer and the willingness to call the entire investigation off as long as I removed the comment. If anything, this seems like a dereliction of duty by the UCPD if my comment was deemed a legitimate threat. That the UCPD would threaten me academically if I did not remove the comment also seemed out-of-line.

On the Chronicle page, someone commented that I’m “seeking protection as free speech”. I’m not seeking protection at all. The case was effectively dropped (seemingly) because of it being fanciful and invalid. Again, I would never have even contacted FIRE if the UCPD had been lucid on what its practices are. I’m seeking answers. I’m not in trouble.

When the Chronicle reporter asked me if I planned any legal action against the university, I immediately gave an adamant “no” (for the record, FIRE never pursues litigation). I love my university; there are amazing, passionate students and faculty here. I only want what’s best for my university. In this case, I feel that it would be to my and fellow student’s benefit if the university would clarify the following:

Does the UCPD or has the UCPD at any point monitored or even perused student comments on social networking websites like Twitter or Facebook?

To what extent does the UCPD investigate flagged comments and what is the proper conduct of the UCPD in questioning the student who made such comment? E.g. threatening the student academically?

On a personal level, I want an explanation for the inconsistencies and some of the inquiries made by the UCPD in my case. Pertaining to the general body, I desire elucidation of university practices and conduct in respect of student privacy and individual rights.

I never thought and still do not think this incident being publicly espoused will haunt me. I honestly hope that by clarifying its policies the university will have an improved campus environment. Correspondingly, I do not seek to simply chastise the university publicly and go on cry “injustice” regarding freedom of speech so I’d get some two seconds of fame (or a day of Twitter retweets). No. This was never about that. If anything, this is only the beginning of positive steps towards reform at the university. I had heard complaints in the past from fellow students about the university’s conduct toward online content; yet, I didn’t ever give the situation a second of my time. I regret not doing so beforehand. It took a situation like this to wake me up.

Thus, I plan at the beginning of this next quarter to meet with administrators to discuss my personal case. Moreover, and more importantly, many friends who have various interests and definitely different politics would like us to meet with administrators to discuss the prospects of a student bill of rights. By the administration working with concerned students, clarifying its policies, and enacting proper reform, such could only be for the benefit of the university and serve as a testament to its commitment to open discourse and academic freedom.

Sponsored by the passionate State Senator James Meeks (D-15th District), this bill has passed committee and is up for a vote today I believe.
The wonderful and passionate student advocacy non-profit, FIRE, has picked up an incident that happened to me at the end of last quarter.

University of Chicago: Censorship of Student’s Online Speech by University Police

CHICAGO, March 24, 2010—For the second time in two years, the University of Chicago has censored a student’s post on a private Facebook page. Undergraduate Joseph “Tex” Dozier posted a joke that he had had a dream about assassinating University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer “for a secret Israeli organization.” Mearsheimer is co-author of the controversial book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. This post prompted an investigator from the university’s police department to question Dozier about his political views, suggest that he would investigate Dozier’s comments on his university radio show, and demand that Dozier remove the post or else have the post reported to Mearsheimer, one of his professors. Dozier came to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) for help…

As you peruse the press release and letter from FIRE regarding my joke status update, you’ll quickly realize the ludicrous nature of this investigation and the inappropriate inquiries into my personal beliefs and actions. I was so busy with finals and already discouraged by the interruption from the UCPD that I didn’t follow-up about this until the next quarter. When I personally asked President Zimmer and VP Kim Goff Crews about the incident, they were caught off guard citing that UCPD would not take such aggressive action on its own and that the UCPD would never monitor social media websites. Still, to this day though, the UCPD won’t comment on the incident, won’t provide any insight on what its practices are, and won’t apologize for their treatment of me right during the middle of finals.

For me, after hearing similar stories from frat friends and others of incidents with the UCPD (e.g. parties posted to Facebook), I really just wanted clarification. So I sent a typed transcript of the exchange to the UCPD requesting that they respond. As I never received any acknowledgement or feedback, I then appealed the situation to FIRE. As I was also taking a course with Professor Mearsheimer (a professor I greatly admire; also encourage everyone to read Great Power Politics and The Israel Lobby), I wanted to respectfully wait to release this until after the winter quarter ended.

Regardless, hopefully by bringing this situation to light, the university that I love dearly will provide some answers, will make the proper clarifications, and correct any solecisms of policy. Student privacy and individual rights unjustly and ironically come under greater attack each day by the very institutions of higher learning that proclaim they respect open discourse and speech. Finally, I promise to never again embarrassingly misspell “paraphenalia”.

I am available for media contact; if interested, I encourage you to notify me through the contact link on my website. I will do my best to promptly respond.

Here are four quick tips to keep in mind as you’re working away on taxes:

Most people get audited because their deductions exceed the average of those in the same income and zip code bracket. So, if you’re making like $40,000 a year and give $8,000 in charitable giving, you definitely want to attach that substantiation.

First-time home-buyers are entitled to a tax credit of 10% up to $8,000 on the cost of a new house. And guess what…? You can still claim this credit if you’ve owned a house for investment purposes or vacation ecstasies.

As long as you’re earning money, YOU can claim the working-pay credit that comes to $400 ($800 on a joint return). Simply file schedule M to do so. Congress ordered the IRS to reduce the withholding tables in the expectation that many people will be claiming this credit. So claim it!

You are able to add the standard deduction of sales tax on purchasing a new car to that of any real estate tax you paid as well – up to $500 ($1000 on a joint return).

Good luck y’all! Remember, the taxman never stops!

Merry Christmas Eve y’all!

Guess what…? Our lovely Congress has just bestowed upon this nation a most wondrous gift of “universal” health care during this joyous season – a gift that will keep giving and taking.

Giving in the sense that never before have we seen such blatant kickbacks and special-interest deals to put another ol’ legislative “victory” on the mantel. Taking in the sense that it’ll be we taxpayers who will reap the long-term consequences of this “reform” through more taxes, loss of medical innovation, and (most importantly) the failure of enacting true, progressive revisions to a restraining, high-cost health care industry – an industry that’s for sure never been subject to an efficiently competitive market ever sense FDR’s wage ceilings, which first led to employer-dominated insurance packages to entice workers during such times of economic hindrances.

Let’s go with an example of giving – the Honorable Harry Reid on his legislative deal making:

I don’t even know if there is a Senator that doesn’t have something in this bill that was important to them. And if they don’t have something in it important to them, then it doesn’t speak well of them.

Well said Harry! Next time all of the senators will “pull a Nelson” and hold out on giving any support to a Democrat-initiative so that they can get their juicy kickback. Apologies to Senator Bayh; at least you got some extra time in front of cameras for your “opposition” through hesitation aka just enough to placate your constituents. I mean Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska got the “air time,” the “honor” of being the make-or-break vote, and the exemption for Nebraska to not have to pay any of the additional costs for Medicaid expansion ($100 million). Oh, wait, I forgot the approximate $6.7 billion in health insurance kickbacks to Nebraska-based Mutual of Omaha. Don’t forget a waiver of the insurance fee for Nebraska Blue Cross/Blue Shield as well. The icing on the cake? Nelson’s blatant admission on the Senate floor of his bought vote:

Three Senators came up to me just now on the floor and said, “Now we understand what you did. We’ll be seeking this funding too.”

Another gift from Harry Reid’s toy bag of political swindling and Tom Foolery: Senator Bill Nelson (I see a pattern here) of Florida, concerned about staying popular with his old-timer constituency in the midst of a bill that takes $400 billion from seniors, got an exemption for Florida seniors currently on medicare benefits from losing them – a $3-$5 billion gift in kind that has a price tag of “priceless” by ensuring those continual votes, while other American seniors are affected.

But, realistically, this whole sham of political theater and backdoor deals for health care “reform” do not wrap up a gift that quite keeps on giving. When costs (health procedure fees, insurance pricing, and taxpayer demands) weigh their due financial onus, most of these deals will have to be cut out like cancer; most of the the deals just serve anyway as short-term benefits (taxpayer detriments) for a long-term failure. And so it’s the taxpayer who will bear much of the fiscal and policy consequences in both the short-term and long-term.

I mean honestly! What the hell is going on?! It’s been 65 or so years since a statist form of health “reform” has been offered and it’s taken this long to perfect a real governmental screw-up. The CBO has written numerous reports on potential negative fallout from this bill. One of them, for example, focused on the passed rebate program, which targets the administrative expenses of particularly small group and individual market insurance companies (kickback to big biz) as these smaller companies have their profits (potential for pricing cuts) gutted by the government. Another case-in-point involves how the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services becomes an unchecked, unaccountable Nurse Mildred Ratched with the ability to decide when Medicare will only pay for a cheaper “alternative” treatment all while being exempted from judicial review as patients have no right to sue the government.

Yet, it’s easy for these details to get all lost in such a large bill all while our courageous, senatorial representatives are championing the cause of health care “reform” based on firm principal and concern for the many disadvantaged. in our country But the list of discrepancies, special-interest deal making, and fiscal fallout became too apparent already to have been ignored. And so we get to the crux of why this bill passed. It was not just the “gifts” Democrats received that brought the troops around for an “aye” vote. As left-leaning economist Robert Kuttner recently (so beautifully and unabashedly) admitted on Bill Moyers’ Journal, the Left and all Democrat senators have an obligation to support this health care bill – though riddled with shortcomings, false promises, and much catering to industry – because of the political necessity to win in 2010. Good thing many of the bill’s provisions don’t go into effect until afterward. I mean who cares? It’s not like this bill affects almost a fifth of our country’s economy, will have devastating fiscal consequences, will still ignore many of the disadvantaged, and will limit the opportunity to expand choice and a more effective manner of lowering health costs. The exigency for political expediency wins the day. Now we know what is really meant by the Democrats when they claim “victory” with this bill.

Though I’d like to say most of the Democrats who voted “yes” had nice intentions, a good number of them should be receiving coal in their stockings every Christmas now. And the American taxpayer, well I guess we’ll just have to hope for change to this current bill as we’ll be receiving a much larger “wish list” from the government sooner or later otherwise every April 15th; except, this wish list has has to be seen through – regardless if government’s been naughty or nice.

So I posted info about our little Nobel Peace Prize fun on campus earlier. Here’s the result. Below you’ll find the text of the email I sent to the University Republicans about the video. Enjoy!

Ladies & Gents,
Recall that a couple weeks after Obama was announced as this year’s recipient for the Nobel Peace Prize, some University Republicans spent a couple hours going around campus asking students what they intend to do or what they did to deserve a Prize – except, in this case edible, chocolate ones were given out.

It’s been difficult to find any time to edit all the videos we collected. Thankfully, with the end of finals came Obama receiving the award, so I threw together what we had to create a hybrid (and hopefully entertaining) policy critique of Obama with the various, amusing student responses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-LwgTbgbHE

Apologies on the sound: the balance seemed fine in the video editor but when rendered a couple spots were drowned out.

There are some student responses at the beginning; then a hypocrisy-and-inaction montage of news clips; then back to student responses after Professor Pape’s commentary at 3:13.

I hope you enjoy – encourage each of you to post it to facebook and share with friends.

Helen White is a dear friend who served as a US Senate page with me and is now a student at UGA. Yesterday, she participated in the 9/12 “March on Washington” and kindly offered to share her thoughts about the historic event as a guest post.

The so-called “silent majority” broke the still morning air of Pennsylvania Avenue on the morning of September 12th, 2009. Approximately one million Americans congregated in our nation’s Capitol to make their frustrations known.

Grassroots efforts in opposition to the continued growth of government have recently been ignored or labeled as hordes of ignorant radicals. People who have come to voice their concerns at town hall meetings have been disparaged by the leftist media (“tea baggers”) and degenerately denigrated as foolish due to their fervid efforts to raise logical and Constitutional concerns while desiring to engage in dialogue with their elected representatives – commendable actions if anything. When the grassroots of T.E.A. parties began to spread around the country, I really started to take note of how much resistance they were coming up against; it was disheartening to see how the media was painting these patriotic citizens. What was even more disturbing was the reaction of our leaders.

President Obama chose largely to ignore and belittle the earnest efforts of T.E.A. party participants. Somehow, I have a hard time believing that he will be able to ignore the message we sent yesterday. The media also tried to stamp a negative label of “angry mob” on the protesters; this tactic truly backfired. I am very proud to have been a part of that patriotic mob, and I heard similar sentiments echoed by fellow protesters.

There was not an air of anger but rather of frustrated pride and heartfelt hope through our faith in liberty. This mob was composed of people from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds. Our uniting factor: we love this country and are concerned that we are going to lose everything our Founders fought for – that a government (regardless of party) ridden with special interests and Constitutional disregard continues to grow in power. Most importantly, we are concerned we are going to lose our voice – that we are going to forcibly become a part of a complacent flock that is controlled by the government.

As we marchers arrived in the Federal Triangle, it became apparent that the original plan of separating everyone by state was not going to work. There were simply too many people there. Moreover, because of the surplus of unexpected participants, the march had to begin early as people were spilling out into the side streets. Once the march reached the Capitol, there was a multitude of speakers from various organizations including former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, founder of parcbench.com Kellen Giuda, and Reverend CL Bryant – just to name a few of my favorites; Senator Jim DeMint and Representative Tom Price were two of the few current legislators who spoke at the event.

At first I was confused as to why more political figures – especially from the media – didn’t show up, and then it hit me. If a big name like Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin had attended, the media would have written this off as mere Republican rhetoric…as mere decriers of “oligarhy”. Yet, the organizers and speakers (including Republicans, Libertarians, independents, and even some Democrats) at the march were frustrated Americans not looking to spread their name, but rather, to share their frustrations…not to speak to us but rather to stand with us.

Since the rise of so-called “progressivism” in the early 20th century with leaders like Wilson, who decried checks-and-balances and committed numerous Constitutional abuses, and FDR, who continued the special-interest ways of Hoover with programs like the NRA and the AAA, the government has grown tremendously in size. According to Robert Higgs and other students of American Political Development, government has grown every single year except for one in the 20th century often under the guise of necessary government intervention in times of peril (the real “Shock Doctrine”). Remember how Rahm Emanuel declared the economic crisis as “an opportunity for us” aka the government? Well, it is time for we people to say enough is enough!

Legislation such as Cap and Trade and socialized medicine (…I mean national health care “reform”…) were what really woke this sleeping mob of patriots up. As David Hume said, “it is seldom that liberty of any kind is lost all at once.” This injustice has been creeping up on us for far too long, and we can remain silent no longer. Good government is small government that interferes in the private sphere as little as possible and does not jeopardize individual liberty. Even if the media and our leaders choose not to recognize the historic march on September 12, 2009, they will surely recognize our demand for change on November 2, 2010 when the midterm elections occur.

In the words of the 9/12 mob, “can you hear us now?!” Congress, can you hear us now? Mr. Obama, can you hear us now?

The silent majority has awoken and will not be suppressed any longer…

On that day, we witnessed that no matter what faith you hold, what skin color you possess, or what political views you believe, true evil does not care.

III

It sees only your freedom and liberty - the things it has always loathed as tyrants like Hitler and Stalin and Pol Pot and Osama Bin Laden have attested to with the blood of the innocent. Our nation has formed polarizing wedges as the years have passed since 9/11; these wedges growing out of the blessed state of protection and safety as our great nation can boast having not again been attacked. Still, the threat remains. Just a couple weeks ago, radical jihadists planned to bomb planes bound for the United States.

iii

Nevertheless, 9/11 does not serve as a time for political rants and antics, which abscind us even further.

iii

This 9/11 I ask each of you to remember how you felt when you saw those towers fall for the first time; I ask each of you to remember how you felt when our American brothers and sisters jumped to their deaths; I ask each of you to remember how you felt when those who loathe those freedoms we hold self-evident made us realized how vulnerable we really are; I ask each of you to remember how you felt when we joined together in unity, in caring, in love.

iii

I ask each of y’all to remember…

Yesterday, we lost a mainstay of modern, American politics. For almost a half a century, Senator Edward Kennedy championed what his heart told him was just.

Breaking legislative deadlocks, forging unsuspected political alliances, and advancing importunate initiatives, Senator Kennedy left his mark which will have place in our chronicles not yet written.

Though his life was marred with great scandal and controversy at times, Senator Kennedy found stability and love with Victoria Reggie and, hopefully, truly found peace with his inner demons as he publicly recognized and apologized for his “own shortcomings, the faults in the conduct of [his] private life.”

Kennedy’s political success found purpose in his indubitable and sincere passion. Whether one accepted the senator’s beliefs as just or condemned them as misinformed, it is self-evident that Kennedy was a good man in the sense that he did most everything asked of him as a public servant for his constituents.

I had the brief pleasure of meeting Ted Kennedy while serving as a Senate page for John Cornyn. I had been downstairs, near the trams that whisk Hill staffers and politicians to-and-fro, notifying the Republican cloakroom of the various senators on their way to an important vote. I was making my way back to the Senate chambers when I found myself walking next to the Lion himself.

After exchanging a short “good day”, the senator noticed my shiny, smooth-belly ostrich cowboy boots and joked, with a big smile and a warm demeanor I had not expected, that I “must be the page from New York for Clinton.” I laughed and quipped back that I was paging “for the man who talks about marrying box turtles.” Ted chuckled as we headed towards the elevator on the way back up to the Senate floor.

I then informed the senator that my boots were actually out of dress code for pages and had been reprimanded on a few occasions – much to the understandable amusement of the boot-wearin’ Cornyn, Enzi, and Lott. I told him I didn’t mind as my boots are a source of my pride and represent who I am. I’ll never forget his response:

Well, as an outspoken person, you’ll soon learn that your confidence in your character and convictions, whatever they are, will never please everyone. I guess if we please everyone we never truly fight for someone.

The elevator door opened and the senator promptly bid goodbye as he made his way to the floor to fervidly fight for someone. I remained in the elevator for a second humbled and inspired by such an unexpected exchange.

On Saturday, Senator Kennedy will be buried at Arlington Cemetery. From a grave resting nearby and a plot looking down from a neighboring hill, Robert and John will welcome their brother home after all these years for continuing the impassioned legacy they had begun and to which they devoted their lives.
